Answer: \(x = 4\)

\(5x\) means 5 TIMES \(x\), so divide both sides by 5.

Tip: Subtracting 5 would give 15 - that is the classic error here.

Two-step equations. Solve for \(x\): \(3x + 7 = 12\)

  1. \(x = \dfrac{5}{3}\)
  2. \(x = 5\)
  3. \(x = \dfrac{19}{3}\)
  4. \(x = 2\)

Answer: \(x = \dfrac{5}{3}\)

Undo the \(+7\) first: \(3x = 12 - 7 = 5\).

Now divide both sides by 3.

Tip: A fraction answer is completely correct. Do not force a whole number.

Two-step equations. Solve for \(x\): \(2x + 9 = 3\)

\(2x = 3 - 9 = -6\)

Divide both sides by 2.

Collect the \(x\) terms first: \(4x - x = 3x\).
